The Divine Feminine
The Divine Feminine is an exploration of the relationship between women and Mother Nature. Inspired by Scandinavian fairy tales, and the story-telling tradition of ancient Celtic and Nordic folklore, the project follows seasons and cycles through fine art photography created in Scotland and Sweden. The Divine Feminine is an ode to the divinity and magic that connects women to the earth - the land, water, flora, and fauna.
This project was exhibited at Edinburgh at Agitate Gallery in March of 2024 for two weeks in a show titled Sága alongside four other photographers. This group exhibition explored the nature of symbolism and identified common themes of family, folklore, women, and self-portraiture. I exhibited this project through four framed prints on the wall representative of the four seasons, with different women standing in the center of the frame looking into the camera. Alongside the framed prints, I printed and handbound a book that followed these women through the seasons. Each chapter began with an original illustrative motif printed onto vellum. I explored symbolism through runes, trees, horses, and other natural elements that tied together each divine woman’s story. The book was bound using a Japanese five-hole binding technique, and only five editions were handmade.
Each woman photographed for this project is close to me - my mother, sister, cousin, and friend. I wanted to include my loved ones as those divine women to personally connect them to the story that they represented.
